A brief history of concrete

Concrete has been used since the days of the Pharaohs in ancient Egypt. What product do you think has held the Pyramids together for 4,000 years?! Today, concrete is the primary material used in driveways, patios, basements, sub-floors, and many other household and building areas. Annual production of concrete is almost 5 billion cubic meters.

Since early civilization building began, materials and compounds were sought that would bind stones into a solid mass. The Assyrians and Babylonians used clay for that purpose, and the Egyptians discovered lime and gypsum mortar as the binding agent for the earliest forms of concrete. However, it was the Romans that perfected the art of concrete production. They mixed slaked lime with volcanic ash from Mt. Vesuvius, and the rest is, well, history.

John Smeaton, a British engineer, conducted experiments with mortars in both fresh and salt water to help in the building of the Eddystone Lighthouse in Cornwall, England. In 1759, it was completed and has stood for over 126 years.

In 1824, Joseph Aspdin, a bricklayer in Leeds, England, took out a patent on a hydraulic cement he called Portland. It was named after the color resembling the stone quarried on the Isle of Portland. Aspdin's method involved a mixture of limestone and clay; then, pulverizing them; and, finally, burning the mixture in a clinker, which was then ground into finished cement.
Elite Crete Africa's pre-mixed cementitious products are all blended with premium quality, white portland cement, imported from Spain & Turkey.

Contractor Sales & Marketing ideas

1. Maintenance Contracts

Many customers ask the question:

"How long is the warranty on an Elite Crete installation?"

It's common for many Installers to stumble on the answer to this question.

The response, however, is critical. If you've determined that the existing patio, driveway, warehouse floor or other surface you're working on is stable (already stood the test of time - just worn and ugly), you probably should offer the customer a 5-year or even a 10-year limited warranty.

HOWEVER, you should only do so when also selling the customer a nominal, but profitable, maintenance contract.

When you buy a new car, you usually get a 3 to 5-year / 100 000 kilometer warranty - great! However, in order to maintain the warranty, you must have scheduled maintenance / services performed as stipulated. You pay for those services, they're not free!

The same thing should apply to an Elite Crete installation. Remember, you took a stable but deteriorated driveway / floor / surface, repaired it and made it look great. Most customers will be happy to pay a maintenance fee to keep it looking new year after year. Typically the maintenance fee that most Installers charge is between R 30 - R 50 per square meter. The maintenance will usually involve pressure washing and then applying a single coat of CSS sealer.

Here are two Main Reasons to Sell a Maintenance contract with your Elite Crete Installation:

  • Generate Extra Income for your Dealership
  • Get Paid to Enhance Projects - This is just as important as #1 (maybe more so). Remember, all of your jobs are REFERENCES! If they're looking great, you'll get additional jobs; if they aren't, you won't.

2. Referrals

As any business owner will tell you, Word-Of-Mouth Referrals are, by far, the best source of new business. The same thing holds true for your Elite Crete Dealership!

Most new Elite Crete Installers start smaller by doing their own patios and driveways, or low key jobs. This makes a lot of sense - get used to using the product in "live" situations, and then gain confidence in tackling bigger and more profitable projects.

Create Your Marquis Showpiece

Then, find a highly visible project and do a top-notch job; create the WOW Factor. Maybe it's a project at your church, a depressed building in your town that's been an "eye-sore" for some time, or even a corporate or municipal project. NOTHING will do more to create the "buzz" and start the referrals coming in than jobs like these. Remember : Referrals beget Referrals!
